A few weeks before Emma and Jason’s wedding, I sat down with them to talk through their plans. They didn’t want anything huge or overly fancy. A ceremony at Newark Registry Office, followed by a relaxed reception in their back garden with the people closest to them. Simple, personal and completely them.

What none of us knew was just how different the day would turn out to be.

A wedding morning none of us expected

When I arrived at their house, one of the neighbours let me in. Almost immediately, I could tell something wasn’t quite right. Then Emma told me.

Jason had suffered a stroke the day before their wedding.

For a moment, there was just silence. My first thought was simply, is he okay?

Emma explained that they still wanted to go ahead, but Jason couldn’t be on his feet for long and would need plenty of rest. Suddenly, the day I thought I was walking into had completely changed.

Despite everything, Emma was in high spirits while getting ready. There were smiles and laughs, but every so often you could see reality catch up with her. Jason was never far from her mind.

Family and friends had spent the previous week helping prepare the marquee and garden, and that continued throughout the morning. Everyone was pulling together.

Jason comes home

Originally, Emma and Jason had planned not to see each other before the ceremony. That changed the moment Jason came home from hospital. As soon as Emma saw him, her emotions took over. She went straight over, hugged him and helped him into a chair.

It was one of the most emotional moments I photographed all day. At that point, they weren’t technically married yet, but watching Emma care for Jason, it already felt like they were.

Newark Registry Office

I left for Newark Registry Office around half an hour before everyone else. I photographed the empty ceremony room and let the registrars know what had happened.

Straight away, the registrars arranged chairs for Emma and Jason so they could sit for the ceremony.

By the time everyone arrived, the focus shifted to the reason we were all there.

They were getting married.

Jason had been determined to make it to his wedding, but the stroke had affected his speech. Emma’s brother read his vows for him.

The moment I remember most was the first kiss.

As Emma leaned in, she gently put her hand under Jason’s chin to support him.

It wasn’t posed. It wasn’t planned. It was just love.

Keeping the day simple

After the ceremony, we managed a confetti photograph and a few relaxed photos at Riverside Park. Jason was starting to tire, so we kept things simple.

No long posing session. No pressure. Just a few photographs together and plenty of space for them to enjoy the day.

Back home

Once everyone returned to the house, the atmosphere started to change. People sat down, drinks started flowing and everyone began to relax.

The tension from the morning slowly lifted and the garden reception became exactly what Emma and Jason had wanted from the start: relaxed, personal and surrounded by the people they loved.

We had originally planned some evening portraits, but after everything that had happened, we cancelled them. The last thing I wanted to do was pull them away from their guests.

Instead, I stepped back and photographed the day as it unfolded because sometimes the best thing a photographer can do is simply let people enjoy their wedding.

Expect the unexpected

Emma and Jason’s wedding was also the first full wedding I photographed. It taught me one lesson very quickly: expect the unexpected. You can plan everything perfectly and still walk through the door to a completely different day.

My job wasn’t just to take photographs. It was to adapt. To give people space. To know when to step in and when to step back because the wedding comes before the wedding photography.

Always.
